APPOINTMENT OF CONVENER OF ELECTORAL MANAGEMENT BOARD FOR SCOTLAND

Malcolm Burr, Chief Executive of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has been appointed as the new Convener of the Electoral Management Board for Scotland (EMB), for a period of 4 years with effect from 1 July 2018. 

Mr Burr takes over the role from retiring Convener, Mary Pitcaithly OBE who was the first Convener and carried out the role for 7 years.

Mr Burr is a solicitor by profession and has been Chief Executive and Returning Officer of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar since November 2005. He was previously Assistant Chief Executive and Depute Returning Officer of Orkney Islands Council from 2000-2005 and had experience within the Councils of the Orkney Islands and Strathclyde.

He is a member of the Electoral Management Board and the First Minister’s Standing Council on Europe. Malcolm hails from Edinburgh, and has degrees in Law from the Universities of Edinburgh and Cambridge. He is a former Chair of SOLACE Scotland, the representative body for Local Government Chief Executives.
